Rethinking Condition: Measuring and Evaluating Wetland Vegetation Responses to Water Management

نویسندگان

چکیده

Environmental water management is increasingly used to restore riverine, wetland and floodplain ecosystems requires an understanding of what the flow regime or restoration objectives are, why these are being targeted how outcomes will be evaluated. This perspective paper focuses on non-woody vegetation, important component river-floodplain a outcome for many environmental programs, such as Basin wide watering strategy Murray-Darling in Australia. Effective vegetation using identifying suite measurable condition (the “what”), relate broader functions values “why”) developing clear cause-and-effect relationships between “how”). A critical this process characterise constitutes success, which reimagining current definitions better incorporate dynamic diverse values. We identify need structured framework both ecological data societal approach not only help inform development benchmarks, monitoring metrics, but also facilitate engagement by spectrum community with watering.

Effects of vegetation management in constructed wetland treatment cells on water quality and mosquito production

The impact of three vegetation management strategies on wetland treatment function and mosquito production was assessed in eight free water surface wetland test cells in southern California during 1998–1999. The effectiveness of the strategies to limit bulrush Schoenoplectus californicus culm density within the cells was also investigated. Removing accumulated emergent biomass and physically li...

From leaf to forests: Measuring vegetation water stress across scales

Vegetation water stress significantly affects agricultural and tropical forest canopies. Water shortages in crops influence plant water dynamics, reduces primary production and might eventually lead to plant death. Tropical forests are essential part of global carbon and water cycle. Continuing drying of e.g. the Amazon rainforest might accelerate climate change through carbon losses and changi...

Physiological and morphological responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to varying water stress management strategies

Sustainability of rice production under limited water conditions is threatened by increasing irrigation water scarcity. Therefore, physiological and morphological responses of rice to varying water stress management strategies should be determined. The physiological and morphological responses of a semi dwarf rice (Hashemi cultivar) to water stress intensities (mild and severe, i.e., short-dura...
